State Park
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

Valley View Trail

California Red Wood

Valley View Trail

  • Nice pictures and cute kids!

I have one question regarding automobiles. I am going to have the second baby but not sure I should go for 3-row SUV or minivan. My major concern is the safety issue but neither of them I thought the rear-end crash could be a problem since the rear row is too close to the end. There will be no much buffer left if a car hit from the rear side.

    Any experience?
  • I have such concern as well. The 3-row in SUV is pretty close to the hatch; it perhaps leaves not much room and poses a substantial risk of injury in an impact. And the room behind 3-row in a minivan is somewhat bigger. However, it all depends on how much room left behind the 3-row, seat back design, and safety features that come with the vehicle.

I remember I read some articles saying that some SUVs, such as Toyota and Volvo, comes with extra bracing on around the hatch and the cargo bay area. It also mentions that Volvo considered 12" as minimum safety distance from any panels.

If I were you, I would get at least a midsize SUV with airbags and reinforced cargo bays or a Sienna/Odyssey with all the safety goodies loaded.

We are actually looking into replacing our old minivan with a midsize SUV or a newer van. We have narrowed down to Toyota Highlander and Honda Odyssey.

Here is a list of top safety picks for 2012 model. You may browse the model year and see the rear crash rating.

  • Thanks for the prompt response.

I knew the website you provided. The funny thing is that the rear end crash data was obtained under 20 mph collision. So basically it is nothing.

Originally I already narrow my candidate to Honda/Odyssey. However, I read news in china said one odyssey was hit by a truck from rear end and 6 out of 7 passengers inside Odyssey were dead. It was a sad story but I began to question the rear end safety buffer in minivan/full size suv. So far, I did not see any vehicle which makes me feel confident. oh, there is one exception, Benz-sprint, but it appears to be too big for a family.

Nice to know you are looking for one family vehicle as well. Maybe I just keep tracking your blog and see what your final decision will be.

Happy Chinese New Year to your family!

  • Even though the rear end crash test is for 20 mph collision, i still think it is a good reference considering some cars still can not pass the 20 mpg test with GOOD rating.

Be honest, we came down to Honda Odyssey because of the 0.9% interest rate. LOL

From your prospective on minivans, which I totally agreed, the collision result is predictable and marginal. With all that, we might just get the Highlander. It is taller, wider, and more rigid (with extra bracing). Other than Highlander, i guess your best bets are probably the Volvo XC90 (reliability will be an issue with XC90 though) or MB Sprint~

    Happy CNY to you too!
